John and Jessica are getting hitched right around the time we are expecting our little girl to arrive in June. They had all kinds of unique aspects that made their session special. One, we got to incorporate their sweet kiddos into their engagement session, two, we got to use their amazing old house (special place in our hearts for old houses) in Calvert for a few portraits, and finally we ran all over John's properties to capture these distinctly "country modern" engagement portraits.

I decided to break their session into two posts, because I love them all equally and wanted to share some work from their family time as well as their time alone.
So, today I leave you with John+Jessica, alone and engaged to be married very soon. We had a such a wonderful time running all over God's green earth ( this session is so country, I'm evening sounding country now:) with them, enjoy!

Did I mention we had horses too?! LOVE these absolutely stunning portraits of Jessica and John's horse.

Be looking forward to a post soon including the cutie kids too! Happy weekend everyone.

First, I hope this Wednesday finds you well! I have been anxiously awaiting being able to share Dawn+Steven's engagement session with you. Their portraits were set in the small and heavily textured town of Calvert,TX.

We have photographed Calvert a handful of times in our careers and really enjoy it. A few years have passed since the last time, so we decided it was time to search it out again.
From the first time we met Dawn+Steven, we loved them! They have such a natural chemistry and relationship that is not only easy to direct photographically, but just plain fun to be around.

I adore the outfits that Dawn put together for the session! A selection of beautiful colors that looked completely photo worthy against the buildings. In fact, I loved them so much that I asked her to do a little write up for our blog discussing her process in selecting her wardrobe.
So, without further ado, the voice of Dawn:
"Does trying to plan your outfit for pictures make you worry that you will see the pictures later and regret your choice? Or perhaps think, "I would love that picture if only my outfit was different"? Well, all of these thoughts certainly went through my head, so I decided that I needed to carefully consider my (our) choices. Here is how I approached our wardrobe selection.
The first, and most important thing to me was, did we feel comfortable and confident when wearing these items? I knew that if these two factors were met, there would be a lot less chance of our uneasiness showing through the smiles. I also thought about different poses (sitting, standing, leaning etc) and how that would affect our comfort and confidence. (This is the most important point to me, be comfortable in what you are wearing,)

What about fit? Not too lose, not too tight, not too short, not too long.
Next, I focused on color; I chose solid and bright colors that complimented our skin, hair, and eyes. I then considered what colors for each of us would look good together and landed on colors that did not match, but rather complimented each other.

Finally, I wanted some accessories (for me) that added a little pop but would not become a focal point in any way. I chose one item to highlight for each outfit. For example, if your shirt is not too busy, perhaps a bold, but not overwhelming necklace will work. Try to avoid necklaces if there are already a couple of different clothing necklines from say a dress and a cardigan. I would then make your statement piece be earrings.

Dawn, thanks for all of the fantastic advice and tips for our other clients who have yet to take their engagement photographs!

We're opening up the weekend with a recent engagement session, honoring Kate+Tai. I love the California vibe that this session began to take on. When we photograph engagements, we have a general idea of where we will begin photographing, but never know where we'll end up. And this session from start to finish is a great example of why this process works for us, every time.

Now for bridals, or day after sessions, or even family session we plan out a bit more than this, but we never want to mess with the natural creative flow that happens with our engagement sessions, so...we haven't. It is another reason why they are one of our favorite events to photograph.
Here are some highlights from the session, hope they brighten your weekend!

Lauren and Damon are set to be wed this June, a perfect month for weddings. Their engagement session was fun, fun, fun! They brought the pups along for the first part of the session and were able to get a few new family portraits, i.e. Lauren and her pup, with Damon and his pup. Pretty cute stuff.
Then we were able to travel all over for the place for the remainder of our time, and listen to Damon strum out some lyrics for his lady on the guitar, so romantic. Tim, time to get going on that banjo playing:)

We can't wait for the big day, guys! Enjoy your last few engaged months:)

A long awaited introduction of a really wonderful couple, Neto + Arlene
After engagement sessions like theirs, I always find myself even more in love with my own husband. That's how it works. Love is contagious. When I see a couple make each other laugh and even blush in the presence of their photographers, I am warmed.
So, to you two, thanks for the reminder of how easy it can be to love the one you're meant to be with!
And BOOM, there's that Texas sunshine. (oh and also a smokin' kiss between the couple-to-be.)

Such a sincere portrait. Love!

And here they are again, beautiful laughs!

Here is THE one. The one they chose to blow up and have framed for their own home. And it looks beautiful! I love the melting boca background of fall colors, and crisp focus on them, in the foreground. So lovely.

Also, how cute and tiny is Arlene? Even standing on top of the rail, she isn't close to Neto's height. Adorable.

Here comes the sun. And the love. It was hard to choose which one from this series that I wanted to include on the blog, so there are two:)

Arlene made this heart of flowers herself reflecting some of the wedding colors.

And we finished up the session with some FOOTBALL! Nothing says "Romance" like the old pig skin.

Neto+Arlene,
I am so excited about photographing Arlene's bridal session in March, because I'm sure she will be nothing short of breath taking. We are so looking forward to the wedding day in May!
